This building, suitable for two people only, forms part of the historic Matjiesfontein werf of thatch and sandstone buildings. It, along with Matjiesfontein homestead (the private home of Willem and Mariette van Wyk), Willem Strydom house and the late sculptor’s studio form the collection of buildings that make up the werf.  Here this talented man worked creating monumental sculptures mostly of Carrara marble. This werf comprising domestic dwellings and outbuildings is a uniquely well-preserved example of the architectural heritage in the Nieuwoudtville area.  

The charming, very old Ystervark cottage has recently been restored. One large room is open plan, consisting of the living/dining area, long counter kitchen, nearby queen-size bed, and at the back a separate bathroom with shower and toilet. There is a closed fireplace, the kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering, and there is an outside braai area. For those wishing a break from cooking, evening meals can be booked with Papkuilsfontein farm kitchen. In flower season of August and September, dinner and breakfast is served at De Lande guesthouse, 2km away.  Additional features are a huge north facing window offering views onto the surrounding veld and a glass door to the east admitting early morning sun – particularly welcome in the winter.

Ystervark is situated on the western periphery of the werf, providing privacy and direct access to the surrounding uncultivated veld. In season there is a wealth of diverse flowering plants on your doorstep. Visits to Papkuilsfontein main farm to see more flowers are facilitated and a map of where to go is provided.

You can either be self-catering or Alrie’s well-known meals can be booked to be enjoyed at the lovely Farm kitchen at the main Papkuilsfontein farm (9km south from De Lande) with its wide views and cozy fireplace during winter.
