This early sandstone, thatch-roofed building formed part of the original homestead on Papkuilsfontein and was the first cottage to be restored. It lies 2km from the main farmhouse, was built all those many years ago on a fossilised sandstone river bed and is surrounded by romantic sandstone ruins and open veld.

De Hoop is a historical longhouse with a spacious living room and hearth (fireplace where you can also braai). It is furnished with comfortable chairs and sofa conducive to reading in the warmth of the winter sun under a northern window. Another window opposite offers lovely views on the southerly side of the cottage.

The furnishings in the cottage are in keeping with the historic ambience and layout of a traditional longhouse.  The living room leads directly into a bedroom with double bed and immediately adjacent bathroom with Victorian bath. There is an outdoor shower with hot water and a view onto the surrounding countryside – a real treat!

To cater for a family or good friends, there are two extra beds in one end of the living room. Please note that the people sleeping in the living room, shall therefore have to go through the bedroom to reach the bathroom.

The cottage has solar lighting and gas for 4 burner hop, oven and fridge as well as for hot water, and is fully equipped to be self-catering, although many guests enjoy having delicious two or three course dinners delivered to their cottage. Breakfast is always served at the farm kitchen at reception, 2kms away.

De Hoop has its own splash pool to cool off during long summer days.  And an outdoor hammock is conducive to rest and relaxation.  Morning and evening walks through Fynbos on the beautiful hiking trail starting from your cottage,  rides on the extensive mountain bike trails and sun-downers at the canyon are some of the activities suggested. You can also drive down to the canyon.  Detailed maps of the farm and trails and reference works on flora and fauna are provided in the cottage

Please note: wifi is only available at reception, 2kms away – so this really is a time to switch off and immerse oneself in the natural rhythm and beautiful environs.

Many thanks for your wonderful hospitality and kindness during our all-too-brief stay at your amazing part of the world. We were both completely “knocked-out” by it all and have subesequently become rather boring on the matter – we just want to tell everyone (and anyone) just how fantastic our stay was!
Kind Regards, Steve & Sue
