The campsite was developed on the extreme right side of the property so as to be private and away from our other guests on the farm. This also means that you are comparatively private when camping at Papkuilsfontein. Do note however, that our campsite is suitable for 8 people, which means that you may share with other people. A sonkwas reed hut, built to be reminiscent of the reed dwellings in the area, houses the bathroom (with one hot shower) and there is one separate flush toilet. There is no electricity, there are solar lights in bathroom and lapa, please make sure to bring your own extra along. The road to it is not suitable for low caravans.
The camp offers beautiful vistas over the Hantamsberg mountains to the east, and the canyon cliffs to the west. It has a huge lapa and braai area, with low raised sandstone seating around it. There are also low sandstone braai pits built at different spots where people usually pitch their tents, if you do not want to share the lapa when there are already people using it. The lapa is quite big, so no problem, but privacy could be. Tall taai- and kraaibosse provide shade while we wait for the trees to grow big enough. In the lapa a reed ‘’pergola’’ has been erected for shade.
The bushcamp is about 6km from reception, towards the canyon, and 1km short of it.
The Bushcamp is camping in the wild. A huge overhang rock, 1 and half times a normal person’s height, has bushes in front of it, concealing most of the overhang. You can braai in the overhang, and there is a lot of space and shade to relax under it. You need a higher clearance vehicle to reach the bushcamp, and a normal sedan car is not suitable. There is no water available, no toilet, nothing, so you have to be totally self-sufficient and please note that you have to take all your litter along when leaving.
***Do note that you are not allowed to drive to that part of the canyon, walking the 1 km to that part of the canyon is allowed and it is a pretty walk and wonderful views once at the canyon.
